Senator Ted Cruz has accused the Council of Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) of illegally pushing a diversity, equity, and inclusion agenda in federal agencies.

In a letter to CIGIE’s chairman, Cruz argues its guidance encourages considering race in hiring practices and implementing unconscious bias training, in violation of law and the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard.

“Inspectors general play a crucial role in holding federal agencies in check and protecting taxpayer dollars,” Cruz wrote. “That is why it is so disappointing that, instead of focusing on its important mission, CIGIE is blindly advancing the Biden administration’s partisan policy goal of diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Cruz asserts CIGIE’s recommendations for tracking workforce demographics and developing recruitment plans to increase diversity amount to unconstitutional, race-based policies.

CIGIE “provides a comprehensive manual for creating and implementing race-based employment practices at every federal [Office of Inspector General] when employment decisions should be based on merit.”

“Considering skin color in employment practices is immoral, and claiming that such actions are necessary to advance DEI — an inherently racist ideology — does not change that,” Cruz wrote. “It is also plainly illegal.”

The policies are “unconstitutional in light of the Supreme Court’s decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard,” he wrote.

He demands documents from CIGIE relating to its DEI agenda and training materials promoting concepts like critical race theory.

The letter comes as the Biden administration works to embed DEI throughout the federal bureaucracy, while a potential future Trump administration may take action to remove such programs and personnel.

“We will pass critical reforms making every executive branch employee fireable by the president of the United States,” Trump said.
