According to a new Gallup survey of over 12,000 U.S. adults, the percentage identifying as LGBTQ reached a record high of 7.6% in 2023.
Younger generations, especially Gen Z women, were most likely to identify as LGBTQ, with over 1 in 4 Gen Z women identifying that way.
“Almost 30% of Gen Z women identify as LGBTQ+, most as bisexual,” Gallup senior editor Jeffrey Jones said. “That’s where a lot of the growth seems to be happening.”
Bisexuals made up the largest share of LGBTQ respondents at 57.3%, while those in the Silent Generation were least likely at just 1%.
Each younger generation is now about twice as likely as the preceding generation to identify as LGBTQ.
“It’s important how much the LGBTQ community is bisexual, and that’s definitely something we see among the younger generations,” Jones said.
“Overall, each younger generation is about twice as likely as the generation that preceded it to identify as LGBTQ+,” the report states. “More than one in five Gen Z adults, ranging in age from 18 to 26 in 2023, identify as LGBTQ+, as do nearly one in 10 millennials (aged 27 to 42).”
Since Gallup began measuring in 2012, there has been a consistent rise in identification, and the researcher expects that trend to continue, with the U.S. population identifying as LGBTQ projected to surpass 10% within the next 10-30 years.
“Sometime in the next 10 to 30 years, we’ll hit 10%,” he said.
