Viewership for the 2023 Academy Awards declined to the fourth lowest in its history, drawing just over 19.5 million viewers.

While a slight increase from the previous year’s record low, it remains well below peak viewership in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Most notably, younger viewers were also down compared to last year despite hits like “Oppenheimer” winning awards.

The earlier start time failed to boost ratings meaningfully.

Even with popular films winning, ratings grew only four percent while the key 18-49 demographic declined five percent, suggesting the Oscars have lost cultural relevance.

Awards shows in general have seen massive viewership drops since the 1990s as these events struggle to attract audiences like they once did.
