At a Capitol Hill event on Title IX hosted by Senator Tuberville, Senator Britt and others discussed protecting women’s sports from trans-identifying male athletes.
Guest Cady Mullins emotionally recounted the toll on her daughter from a trans swimmer joining her college team.
“To think that having a man on a women’s team doesn’t affect our young women is to just ignore an ugly, ugly truth. The hell these girls went through affected them dramatically,” Mullins said.
“What can Congress do to put the responsibility on the schools to protect them?” she asked.
Britt said adults must demand conversations and support young athletes.
“When we take back the Senate next year, I have a feeling that we’ll be able to move some of this forward,” Britt said.
While some bills have stalled, Britt and Tuberville said electing more Republicans could help move legislation forward.
Tuberville’s past bill to amend Title IX and ban males from women’s sports failed due to lacking 60 Senate votes to overcome a filibuster.
Republicans gaining a Senate majority in November may help, but Tuberville cautioned progress is not guaranteed as Democrats would still need to support common-sense decisions to save women’s sports.
“We have an election this year and hopefully we take the Senate,” Tuberville said. “In the Senate, you still have to get 60 votes (to bypass a filibuster). We won’t have 60, and so we’re going to have to plead to our cohorts on the Left to make a common sense decision to save women’s sports.”
Other speakers urged empowering voters to change this through elections.
