A U.S. appeals court upheld a ruling blocking a Florida law banning mandatory workplace diversity training promoting certain concepts, stating it violates employers’ free speech rights.
The law, signed by Governor DeSantis, prohibits training on topics like inherent racism or sexism.
“Florida may be exactly right about the nature of the ideas it targets,” U.S. Circuit Judge Britt Grant wrote. “Or it may not. Either way, the merits of these views will be decided in the clanging marketplace of ideas rather than a codebook or a courtroom.”
The court found the law unconstitutional, as it limits discussions on specific topics.
The law is part of a trend in Republican-led states discouraging corporate stances on social issues.
“Today is a good day for the First Amendment and the ability of American businesses to speak freely,” lawyer Shalini Goel Agarwal said.
Businesses challenged the law, emphasizing free speech.
