United Airlines experienced five flight emergencies within one week involving four different aircraft.
On Saturday and Friday, two Airbus A320 flights bound for Chicago and Mexico City had to return or divert due to oil warnings and hydraulic problems respectively.
On Friday, the landing gear on a Boeing aircraft collapsed after landing in Houston.
The next day, a tire fell off a United plane headed to Japan, crashing into cars below.
Last Monday, engine flames erupted on another Boeing plane after takeoff from Houston.
While United said the incidents were unrelated, the FAA and NTSB will investigate each event.
“Each of these events is distinct and unrelated to one another,” United Airlines stated.
“We take every safety event seriously and will investigate each of the incidents that occurred this week to understand what happened and learn from them,” United said. “Much of this work is conducted together with the manufacturers, the FAA, and the NTSB as well as with the manufacturers of individual components … Safety is our top priority, and we’ll continue to do everything we can to keep our customers and employees safe.”
Safety is United’s top priority as they seek to understand what occurred and apply lessons learned working with regulators and manufacturers.
The string of emergencies within a short period captured attention around the safety of United’s operations.
