Democratic Rep. Katie Porter lost her bid for a California Senate seat, finishing third behind Rep. Adam Schiff and a Republican candidate.
Seeking to challenge the political establishment, Porter later claimed the primary was “rigged” against her by billionaire spending on attack ads.
This drew criticism from others within her party for sour grapes and hypocrisy, since Porter herself had benefited from super PAC money in the past.

“You did the same thing you’re mad at Schiff for doing. Just stop. You sound like a sore loser,” one X user wrote.
She walked back her “rigged” comments to say she meant the political system is manipulated by big dark money groups.
“‘Rigged’ means manipulated by dishonest means,” Porter said. “A few billionaires spent $10 million+ on attack ads against me, including an ad rated ‘false’ by an independent fact checker.”
“I said ‘rigged by billionaires’ and our politics are — in fact — manipulated by big dark money. Defending democracy means calling that out.”
However, the evidence suggests Porter is more upset with Schiff for outmaneuvering her campaign than with donors, having burned bridges and given up her House seat, all while failing to overcome the establishment candidate.
Her anti-establishment message proved insufficient against Schiff in the primary.
