Reports indicate the Biden administration is actively seeking ways to force the collapse of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition in the midst of military operations against Hamas in Gaza.
The administration has been increasingly critical of Netanyahu publicly and privately.
Sources say Biden officials have asked experts how the US could demand things that would cause Netanyahu’s coalition to fall apart and trigger new elections.
“I have been asked by a serious administration figure what it is that will force the Netanyahu coalition to collapse. They were interested in the mechanics, what can we demand which will collapse his coalition,” one Israeli expert said.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris implied US aid to Israel could be at risk if the government’s actions continue, while clarifying support for the Israeli people.
“Are the Israelis at risk of losing U.S. aid if this continues?” Harris was asked.
“I think it’s important for us to distinguish or at least not conflate the Israeli government with the Israeli people,” Harris said.
Netanyahu has long been an obstacle to Democratic policy goals in the region, opposing the Iran nuclear deal under Obama and Biden’s vision for a Palestinian state.
The administration appears to be leveraging military and financial pressure to weaken Netanyahu’s political position.
