Donald Trump’s lawyers argued in a court filing that he cannot receive a fair trial this year on charges of mishandling classified documents due to his ongoing 2024 presidential campaign.
However, the filing itself suggested conflicting dates, first stating a fair trial was not possible in 2022 but later proposing an August 2024 start date.
Special Counsel Jack Smith had asked for a July 2022 start.
The case will be considered Friday by the presiding judge, who had previously pushed back pre-trial deadlines.
Trump faces four criminal cases and has sought to delay them all, claiming they are politically motivated.
He has pleaded not guilty to taking sensitive documents to Mar-a-Lago after leaving office in 2021 and obstructing their return.
Trials in the other cases are uncertainly timed in relation to the 2024 election.
