Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Academy Awards and revealed that he was advised against reading a critical post about the Oscars from former President Donald Trump on Truth Social during the live broadcast.
Trump had slammed Kimmel and called the show “politically correct” and “boring.” Despite being told not to, Kimmel waited until near the end to read parts of Trump’s post aloud, which got big laughs from the celebrity audience.
“Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars,” Trump wrote.
“His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be…Also a really bad politically correct show tonight, and for years – Disjointed, boring, and very unfair. Why don’t they just give the Oscars to those that deserve them. Maybe that way their audience and TV ratings will come back from the depths. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
“They’re like, ‘You’ve got a little bit of time’ and I was like, ‘I’m reading the Trump tweet,’ and they’re like, ‘No, no, don’t read that,’” Kimmel said.
“‘Yes I am,’” he recalled saying.
When he read “Make America Great Again,” the audience erupted in more laughter and applause.
Kimmel further mocked Trump by asking if it wasn’t past his “jail time.”
“Thank you President Trump. Thank you for watching — isn’t it past your jail time?” Kimmel said.
