A World War II veteran celebrated his 103rd birthday at a Pennsylvania restaurant surrounded by family and neighbors.

Lt. Ralph Perkner served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War, and was greeted with a hero’s welcome during his birthday celebration.

Perkner had a long career as an optometrist, working until the age of 90, and was known in his community for his daily swimming routine.

When asked the secret to his longevity, Perkner credited his daughters for keeping him strong.

Perkner said, “It’s the ladies that makes me stronger.”

The veteran has seen many historic events over the course of his long life.

His son-in-law, Tom Murray, said, “I hope if I get as old as he is, I’m half as good as he is.”
