Federal immigration authorities arrested three undocumented Portuguese women in Pawtucket, Rhode Island who were charged in connection with the death of a 1-year-old boy under their care.

The women, ages 32, 25 and 22, were initially arrested by local police on charges of child endangerment after responding to an emergency call and finding the boy unresponsive with bruising.

One woman had overstayed a tourist visa for over 25 years, while the other two overstayed visas granted under a visa waiver program.

They were released on bail but then arrested by ICE for immigration violations.

The boy’s alleged 25-year-old father, a citizen, was also charged with manslaughter and child abuse and remains in custody.

ICE said the arrests aimed to hold accountable those whose alleged crimes endangered a child, and that undocumented foreigners cannot escape justice.

ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons said, “The alleged crimes of these unlawfully present individuals resulted in the death of an innocent child.”

“Those who commit crimes against children must be held accountable. Unlawfully present foreign nationals posing a danger to our New England communities cannot expect to escape the consequences of their actions,” said Lyons.
