Rep. Mike Johnson spoke to VP Kamala Harris at the State of Union address, where he made small talk.

He asked if her parents had survived to see her as vice president, not realizing her mother had passed away.

“I asked her if her parents had been alive, did they survive to see her serving as vice president, and she lamented that they had not,” he said.

Johnson’s question received criticism given Harris’ mother died in 2009 and she has said she is not close with her still-living father, suggesting the question was ill-informed or inappropriate small talk for the occasion.
