A man who had become an advocate for criminal justice reform after being released from 25 years in prison was charged with murder in New York.
Sheldon Johnson Jr. was found with a torso and body parts in his apartment and charged over the death of Colin Small.
“I’m innocent!” Johnson said in court.
Police allege Johnson and Small may have had a past dispute from their time together in prison.
Johnson had appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast to discuss his advocacy work after claiming to change his life in prison and leave his gang ties behind.
“I really said: I have to change my life. I have to change my life. I just can’t do this,” he said. “I had a wife, I had kids, I had family still, my son was growing up. He was hearing stories of my so-called notoriety. I just didn’t want to be that dad.”
However, he is now facing new murder charges in what underscores the challenges of rehabilitation.
