Several Republican lawmakers will bring “Angel Families” impacted by crimes committed by illegal immigrants to President Biden’s State of the Union address, aiming to raise awareness of the issue.
Rep. Mike Collins invited the parents of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old woman murdered in Georgia by an illegal alien from Venezuela who had been previously arrested but not detained due to sanctuary city policies.
“As Joe Biden comes to Capitol Hill to defend his atrocious record, the seat for my guest will remain vacant in honor of Laken Riley and all Americans who have lost their lives to an illegal alien criminal,” Collins said.
Speaker Mike Johnson is hosting two NYPD officers attacked by a group including illegal aliens from Venezuela with gang ties.
“Sanctuary cities have endangered American citizens across the country. Brave law enforcement officers, like NYPD Lieutenant Ben Kurian and Police Officer Zunxu Tian, should never be victims of the senseless crimes these policies encourage,” Johnson said.
Republicans argued Biden’s open border policies have endangered Americans and law enforcement, and that he has ignored Angel Families, eliminating an office that helped them.
“Our NYPD officers are on the front line every single day working to keep our streets safe, and unfortunately now they are being forced to deal with hundreds of violent crimes being committed by those in our country illegally,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis said.
They seek to draw attention to the toll of illegal immigration during the address.
