Top officials criticized MSNBC hosts including Jen Psaki for laughing at voters concerned about illegal immigration.
During a discussion of Super Tuesday results, Psaki mocked immigration as a top issue for Virginia voters.
“I mean, if you look at some of these exit polls — I mean, I live in Virginia,” Psaki said. “Immigration was the number one issue. Again, these could change — in Virginia,” she said as they laughed.
Rachel Maddow joined in the mocking, likening Virginia’s border to West Virginia.
“Well, Virginia does have a border with West Virginia,” Maddow joked. “A very contested area.”
This drew condemnation from border officials, governors, and senators who noted the real impacts of the border crisis include deaths, crimes, and a recent tragedy near Psaki’s home involving the death of a toddler by an illegal immigrant.
Critics accused the hosts of being out of touch and dismissing legitimate concerns, saying coastal elites should talk to real Americans instead of mocking them.
“Americans dying by the thousands of fentanyl overdoses, women raped and murdered, kids sex-trafficked, cops assaulted…all due to leftists’ open border,” The Border Patrol Union wrote on X.
“Jen Psaki and Rachel Maddow: ‘OMG, it’s hilarious, hahahahahahahahaha, people in Virginia are so stupid…,’” they added.
“Jen Psaki & Rachel Maddow owe Jeremy Poou-Caceres’s family an apology,” Sen. Ted Cruz said. “He was a 2-year-old just killed by an illegal alien less than a 30 minute drive away from Psaki’s $1.7 million home in Arlington, Virginia.”
“The coastal elites are mocking Americans. What happened to the supposed care for all Americans and unity that the Adults spoke so eloquently about?” former Trump administration official Ezra A. Cohen said.
“A teenage girl in Virginia was sexually assaulted by an illegal immigrant in January, but the out-of-touch professional Democrats on MSNBC dismiss and joke about Americans’ legitimate concerns,” Sen. Tim Scott said.
“Democrats are totally disconnected from real America,” said Sen. Eric Schmitt. “Just 2 weeks ago, in Virginia, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela was arrested /charged w/sexually assaulting a 14 y/o girl. He had come here illegally thru El Paso in Sept 2023 & released into the U.S. by the federal gov’t.”
The reaction shed light on the disconnect between Democrats and concerns about the impacts of lax border enforcement and illegal immigration.
