A Texas man was arrested for allegedly scheming to defraud a former New York congressman, George Santos, who was facing criminal corruption charges.
The man, Hector Medina, falsely claimed he could get the charges against Santos dropped if he was wired $900,000.
Medina used a fake identity and pretended to have connections to judges.
While there is no evidence Santos took the offer, prosecutors became aware of Medina pestering Santos with messages last summer.
Medina also targeted other public figures in similar schemes to pay off gambling debts. He now faces wire fraud charges carrying a maximum 20 years in prison.
Santos himself faces several fraud charges related to his campaign and personal finances, carrying a potential 22 year sentence. He has pleaded not guilty and his case is ongoing.
