The Dartmouth College men’s basketball team voted to form a union, a first for college athletes, potentially setting a precedent for others.

The players voted to join a union, challenging the traditional view of student-athletes.

“Today is a big day for our team,” Dartmouth juniors Cade Haskins and Romeo Myrthil said. “We stuck together all season and won this election. It is self-evident that we, as students, can also be both campus workers and union members. Dartmouth seems to be stuck in the past. It’s time for the age of amateurism to end.”

Dartmouth raised concerns about potential consequences, including expulsion from the Ivy League or NCAA.

The move reflects a shifting landscape in college sports towards recognizing athletes as employees.

“I think this is just the start,” Haskins said. “I think this is going to have a domino effect on other cases across the country, and that could lead to other changes.”

The unionization effort may spark changes in how college athletes are treated and compensated, leading to a legal battle with the college.
