J.K. Rowling criticized a case in the UK where a man who filmed women in a public restroom claimed to identify as a woman when confronted by police.
The man, Kurtis Mawson, pleaded guilty to sexual assault and various child pornography charges.
“That thing only evil, nasty bigots claim happens, and that never, ever happens, has happened. Again,” Rowling wrote.

Rowling argued this case showed the risks posed to women and girls by allowing male-bodied individuals access to women’s spaces based on gender identity alone.
She said some males have exploited transgender activism to assault women, and that pressuring women to accept increased risk appeases male feelings rather than protects women.
“It is possible to want trans people to be safe and happy while recognising that there are risks to women and girls in eradicating single sex spaces. Women and girls are being pressured to surrender their hard-won rights to a group that poses a proven danger to them,” she said.
“The statistics don’t lie. Some – not all – trans-identified males have committed sexual and violent offences against women and girls. Some male predators have capitalised on gender identity activism to claim a trans identity they never espoused pre-conviction or assault,” she added.
“Telling women and girls they must accept increased risk to themselves to appease male feelings is the very definition of the patriarchy you claim to stand against. Vulnerable women are paying the price for a fashionable fallacy that has serious, real world consequences,” she said.
The case in question involved Mawson filming inside a women’s bathroom stall and possessing child pornography, having previously been convicted of similar offenses.
Rowling’s comments addressed the tension between transgender rights and those of women in single-sex spaces.
