Gunfire erupted along the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County on Sunday, leaving one person killed.

Members of the U.S. Border Patrol’s tactical team (BORTAC) engaged in a gun battle with a group of violent individuals who were attempting to rob illegal aliens.

One of the robbers, known as “rip crews” who cross into the U.S. to steal from migrants before fleeing back to Mexico, was killed by BORTAC on U.S. soil while the rest escaped into Mexico.

The border patrol union president described these rip crews as increasingly brazen in carrying out attacks in front of border cameras.

“They’re doing it right in front of our cameras,” National Border Patrol Council president Brandon Judd said. “We’ve had several incidents where rip crews have been robbing and stealing from migrants right in front of the camera.”

Recently released surveillance images from the border chief also showed armed bandits robbing migrants, underscoring the dangers posed to agents, migrants, and the public from these criminal smuggling operations.

“USBP surveillance technology near Chula Vista, CA captured these images of armed bandits robbing several groups as they attempted to enter the country illegally,” U.S. Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens wrote. “Yet another example of the dangers these criminals & smugglers pose to the public, the migrants and our agents.”
