The sequel to “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve, titled “Dune: Part Two,” had an impressive opening weekend at the box office, matching the success of “Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan.
Both films performed well domestically, with “Dune: Part Two” earning $81.5 million and “Oppenheimer” bringing in $82.4 million.
Industry projections suggest that the 2024 box office may face challenges due to various factors like sequel fatigue, bloated budgets, and recent Hollywood strikes.
“We should be nervous about the first half of 2024,” an unnamed film studio executive said.
“There’s no way that a labor stoppage as prolonged as chaotic as this wasn’t going to have consequences… Fire comes through and burns a forest and a town, and then the fire is over. But the consequences of the fire aren’t over: There’s mudslides, and there’s damaged infrastructure.”
“The fire is over: Now we’ve gotta rebuild the town,” they said.
The success of these high-quality films may not be sufficient to rescue the movie industry in 2024, requiring more hits to sustain major Hollywood studios financially.
