Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton acknowledged that both Joe Biden and Donald Trump are old, but argued that Biden has effectively done his job without threatening democracy, in contrast to Trump who she said barely makes sense and is dangerous.

She framed the election as a choice between the two old candidates, with the goal of saving American democracy by maintaining freedom, rule of law and fundamental rights.

“All of that should cause us to just put up flashing red lights,” Clinton said. “I mean, come on. This is not someone who we want to give power to again. So I think that’s what this election’s really going to be about. And, you know, somebody the other day said to me, Zerlina, well, but, you know Joe Biden’s old. I said, you know what, Joe Biden is old. Let’s go ahead and accept the reality. Joe Biden is old.”

Clinton instructed voters to weigh their options and figure out how to protect democracy, given concerns about a candidate not knowing what’s going on are greater for Trump.

Clinton has embraced Biden’s age and asserted that he has served competently without endangering democratic institutions, unlike her characterization of Trump.

“So we have a contest between one candidate who’s old, but who’s done an effective job and doesn’t threaten our democracy. And we have another candidate who is old, barely makes sense when he talks, is dangerous, and threatens our democracy,” she said.

“So really pick between your two old ones and figure out how you’re going to save our democracy,” Clinton said. “Because no matter where you stand on the political spectrum, you want to maintain freedom, and the rule of law, and protection for people’s fundamental rights, or at least I used to think so.”

“So if you’re worried about a person not necessarily knowing what’s going on, I’d worry a lot more about Donald Trump,” Clinton added.
