A survey of nearly 200 scientists at British universities found that most believe sex is biologically binary, while a majority view gender as fluid.

Specifically, 58% agreed sex is binary except in rare intersex cases, while 29% said it is not and 13% had no view.

Meanwhile, 64% believed gender is fluid, 22% said it is binary, and 14% had no answer.

A behavioral biology professor criticized that at least 29% don’t understand the biological concept of sex and at least 22% don’t know what gender means.

“To me this just means that at least 29% of the academics that filled out this questionnaire do not understand the biological concept of sex, and at least 22% of them do not know what gender means,” professor of behavioral biology Dr. Wolfgang Goymann said.

The debate around defining sex and gender as binary versus fluid has become politically contentious, as some U.S. states consider related legal measures and recent public opinion polls in America show rising support for the gender binary.
