Maine residents are upset about the state’s $13 million plan to build apartment complexes for illegal border crossers, providing up to two years of free rent.

The project, criticized as the “Taj Mahal” for illegals, faced backlash from locals who questioned why these apartments, costing $1,800 to $2,300 a month for citizens, would be free for illegal immigrants.

“You have all these houses being built. That’s discrimination, in my eyes,” Maine resident George Bernier said. “Am I too white? Is that what it is? Do I work too much? What’s the discrimination factor?”

Concerns were raised about neglecting the needs of taxpaying citizens and favoring illegals, with calls to prioritize residents first.

“How can we give housing to anyone other than our Brunswick residents first?” Bernier asked.

“You need to take a look at the needs of our current residents,” resident Lisa Trombley said. “If we don’t have a plan to take care of the residents, we shouldn’t be inviting them to come. No matter where they are coming from, we can’t afford to do it.”

Despite initial funding from MaineHousing, criticism from residents and figures like Donald Trump Jr., the state agency notes that migrants will have to pay 30% of their income in reduced rent fees if employed.

“Up in this part of the world and up in Maine, they are giving illegal immigrants free housing — multimillion-dollar free housing — while they’re kicking out veterans in the street,” Donald Trump Jr. said. “I mean, what’s going on?”
