House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn., has decided to run for re-election after initially planning to retire, following encouragement from former President Trump.
Trump endorsed Green’s decision, praising his work and urging him to run again.
“While my strong desire was to leave Congress at the end of this year, since my announcement, I have received countless calls from constituents, colleagues, and President Trump urging me to reconsider,” Green stated.
Green’s change of heart came after discussions with Trump and other Republican lawmakers about the 2024 election cycle and maintaining the House majority.
“I will be running for re-election so I can be here on Day 1 next year to help President Trump end this border crisis once and for all,” he said.
“Mark Green has had lots of options because of his political talents, and the great job he has done as a Congressman, but given the fantastic work he’s doing as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I hope he runs for Re-Election to the U.S. House of Representatives. If he does, he has my Complete and Total Endorsement!” Trump wrote.
As Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Green has been actively involved in impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“I am unbelievably proud of and grateful for the other Republican Committee members as well as the staff of the Homeland Security Committee,” Green said.
“I will never forget the hard work and long hours they put in to respond to an unprecedented and self-inflicted border crisis by holding Secretary Mayorkas accountable and passing H.R. 2.”
