Prosecutors in the Georgia 2020 election interference case offered text messages between defense attorney Terrence Bradley and Michael Roman’s lawyer Ashleigh Merchant that appear to contradict Bradley’s testimony in court.
The texts from September 2021 to February 2022 show Bradley confirming information for Merchant about the romantic relationship between Fulton DA Fani Willis and special prosecutor Nathan Wade before Wade was hired, such as details about trips they took together.
Merchant said, “I am nervous.”
“This is huge,” she said.
Bradley said, “You are huge.”
“You will be fine. You are one of the best lawyers I know. Go be great.” added Bradley.
However, when called to testify, Bradley claimed to have no direct knowledge of the relationship’s start and said Merchant may have misinterpreted his texts.
Bradley testified, “I have no direct knowledge of when the relationship started.”
The defense had hoped Bradley’s testimony would support their effort to remove Willis for an alleged conflict of interest from her ties to Wade, but his inconsistent statements under oath have undermined that goal.
Merchant said, “Judge, he doesn’t remember much of anything right now.”
The judge will hear final arguments Friday on disqualifying Willis as the case remains overshadowed by the relationship issues.
