E. Jean Carroll, who was awarded $83 million in her defamation lawsuit against Donald Trump, expressed concern about collecting the judgment due to Trump’s financial issues.
Her lawyers noted the $454 million judgment in the NY AG’s civil fraud case against Trump, arguing his request to delay paying the defamation award should be denied.
Roberta Kaplan, Carroll’s lawyer said, “He simply asks the Court to ‘trust me’ and offers, in a case with an $83.3 million judgment against him, the court filing equivalent of a paper napkin; signed by the least trustworthy of borrowers.”
“To begin, recent developments give rise to very serious concerns about Trump’s cash position and the feasibility (and ease) of collecting on the judgment in this case,” said the lawyers.
A judge partially denied Trump’s request, allowing enforcement of financial penalties from the fraud case to be paused if he posts a full bond, but not a reduced bond.
If Trump does not post the full amount, the NY AG can begin collecting the $454 million fraud judgment.
Carroll’s lawyers argued Trump’s financial position raises doubts about collecting the $83 million defamation award she was granted by a jury for Trump denying her sexual assault allegations.
