A new poll finds former President Trump gaining on President Biden among young voters aged 18-34.
The Axios/Generation Lab Youth poll shows 48% would vote for Trump and 52% for Biden if the election was held now, compared to Biden’s 20-point lead with this group in 2020.
Some experts note questions around assumptions that youth will consistently favor Democrats.
Neil O’Brian, a political scientist at the University of Oregon, said, “We don’t know enough yet.”
“But this idea that young people are going to keep populating into the Democratic Party? There are some question marks around that,” he continued.
Biden’s lead narrows to 63-39% among the 42% who say they will absolutely vote.
Trump’s popularity coincides with the economy ranking as young voters’ top issue over abortion, student debt, immigration and climate change.
The results follow other recent surveys showing Trump leading Biden with under-30 and under-35 groups.
While more data is needed, the poll suggests Trump is making inroads with youth who will be important in shaping the political future.
