New York City Mayor Eric Adams called for modifications to the city’s sanctuary policy after an illegal immigrant accused of kidnapping and murdering a woman in Georgia had previously been arrested but released in NYC.

Under current law, local law enforcement cannot cooperate with ICE to detain and deport criminal immigrants.

Mayor Adams said immigrants committing felonies or violent acts should be turned over to ICE for deportation.

The mayor declared, “For those who are committing crimes, we need to modify the sanctuary city law that if you commit a felony or a violent act, we should be able to turn you over to ICE and have you deported.”

The proposal comes after Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal Venezuelan immigrant arrested in NYC last year for injuring a child, was released and is now charged with murdering a woman in Georgia.

Ibarra had crossed into the US illegally in September and was resettled in NYC.

The sanctuary law ensured his release from jail before ICE could request custody.

Adams wants changes so the NYPD can hand over violent criminal immigrants to federal immigration authorities.
