The major story from Michigan’s Democratic primary was the success of the “uncommitted” campaign led by Muslim American voters dissatisfied with Biden’s handling of Israel-Palestine.
Over 20% of Democratic voters and 56% in Dearborn, a Muslim-majority area, voted uncommitted, far exceeding expectations and targets set by organizer Rep. Rashida Tlaib.
The uncommitted vote, at over 101,000, exceeded Trump’s 2016 margin of victory in Michigan and was more than half of Biden’s 2020 win margin.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib said, “I was proud today to walk in and pull a democratic ballot and vote uncommitted.”
“We must protect our democracy. We must make sure that our government is about us, about the people,” insisted the lawmaker.
Tlaib highlighted, “When 74% of Democrats in Michigan support a ceasefire, yet President Biden is not hearing us. This is the way we can use our democracy to say, listen, listen to Michigan, listen to the families right now that have been directly impacted.”
Tlaib and other campaign supporters have accused Biden of supporting genocide in Palestine and demanded a ceasefire or end to arms shipments to Israel, refusing to commit to Biden in November without policy changes on Palestine.
