A recent Monmouth University poll reveals that 84% of Americans view illegal immigration as a serious problem, with 61% considering it very serious and 23% somewhat serious.

Concern has increased during President Biden’s term compared to previous administrations.

“Illegal immigration has taken center stage as a defining issue this presidential election year,” Patrick Murray, director of Monmouth University Polling Institute said. “Other Monmouth polling found this to be Biden’s weakest policy area, including among his fellow Democrats.”

“These results illustrate why the border deal was dead on arrival,” Murray said.

“The vast majority of rank-and-file Republicans and many independents believe it is too soft on illegal immigration, even if they don’t know exactly what’s in the legislation.”

“Senate GOP leadership could have tried to sell the bill, but that would have almost certainly been fruitless once Donald Trump weighed in against it,” he said.

The survey indicates a rise in worry across all age groups, with Democrats and independents showing higher levels of concern.

Support for a U.S.-Mexico border wall has also increased, with 53% in favor.

Nearly half of Americans believe the Senate border bill isn’t tough enough on illegal immigration.
