After the FBI informant cited by House Republicans in their Biden investigations was charged with fabricating claims, the House Oversight Committee chair James Comer tried to downplay the informant’s significance.
Comer claimed on Newsmax that Alexander Smirnov, a long-time FBI informant, was not actually important to their probe.
However, video from MSNBC showed Comer and other Republicans had previously touted Smirnov’s accusations as “very crucial” to their investigation.

Democrats criticized Comer for now dismissing Smirnov after aggressively promoting his since-discredited claims.
Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Ken Buck acknowledged colleagues should not have presented Smirnov’s statements as credible when doubts existed, saying it undermined their arguments.
Rep. Buck said, “We were warned that the credibility of this statement was not known, and yet my colleagues went out and talked to the public about how this was credible and damning.”
“It appears to absolutely be false and really undercuts the nature of the charges,” continued the lawmaker.
Overall, Comer was called out for contradicting past statements hyping Smirnov by denying his relevance after the informant was charged with lying.
