Elon Musk criticized Google after its AI image generator Gemini was generating historically inaccurate images depicting white historical figures as non-white.
He said Google “overplayed their hand” in making its racial biases clear.
“The problem is not just Google Gemini, it’s Google search too,” Musk wrote.
The answer to the question is "yes".
Google was manipulating its search results to advance "equity" as far back as 2018. It described in an online FAQ how it prioritized "algorithmic fairness" over factual accuracy. https://t.co/cWZh91O0Ar pic.twitter.com/Hyd9hLglwO

Musk has frequently criticized Google, Facebook and others for meddling with algorithms to suppress certain content.
Analysis found 63% of Google News articles came from left-wing outlets in 2023.
“In some cases, it may be appropriate to take no action if the system accurately affects current reality, while in other cases it may be desirable to consider how we might help society reach a more fair and equitable state, via either product intervention or broader corporate social responsibility efforts,” Google stated.
“I’m glad that Google overplayed their hand with their AI image generation, as it made their insane racist, anti-civilizational programming clear to all,” Musk wrote.
Musk said Google News is often “wrong” or “misses the point.”
In response, Musk teased plans for his own search engine and email service “XMail” that would not include pre-programmed racial biases.
“Out of curiosity, I looked at the Google news page. The so-called ‘news’ either misses the point or is flat out wrong,” Musk said in December of 2023. “One is left depressed and misled.”
He aims to turn X into an “everything app” like those popular in China.
However, it’s unclear if “XMail” would be integrated into X.
