Mary Trump has strongly criticized Jon Stewart for his “both-sides-ism” rhetoric comparing Donald Trump and Joe Biden, arguing it is dangerous for democracy.
In his return to Comedy Central last week, Stewart joked that both 77-year-old Trump and 81-year-old Biden were old candidates in 2024.
Mary said Stewart “took a swing” at her and “missed.”
The former president’s niece said this falsely elevated Trump and led to voter apathy.
“I criticized him for erroneously elevating my uncle by claiming, ‘We’re not suggesting neither man is vibrant, productive, or even capable,’” she said. “Any honest, objective person knows this is completely false … [and] the kind of both-sides-isms I was calling out.”
When Stewart defended his comments, arguing liberals can take criticism, Mary Trump argued he misunderstood her point and was spreading a false equivalency.
“I find it dangerous,” Mary added, “coming from an incredibly influential public figure, because it leads to voter apathy, which is unacceptable in an election year when … one side threatens to eliminate our democracy and the … other … seeks to strengthen it.”
She believes Stewart’s influential platform could impact voters and help Republican critics who have also questioned Biden’s mental acuity.
“Not only is Stewart’s ‘both sides are the same’ rhetoric not funny, it’s a potential disaster for democracy,” she wrote on X. “I know Donald, and the media has to stop with the both sides [expletive].”
The debate has highlighted tensions around scrutinizing candidates from different parties.
