Donald Trump delivered a dark and ominous speech at the 2022 CPAC conference, portraying the U.S. under Biden as descending into chaos and warning of an apocalyptic outcome if he is not restored to power.
He repeated lies about the 2020 election and framed policy debates around inflammatory cultural issues.
“I stand before you today not only as your past and future president, but as a proud political dissident,” Trump said.
“For hard-working Americans Nov. 5 will be our new liberation day — but for the liars and cheaters and fraudsters and censors and impostors who have commandeered our government, it will be their judgment day. Your victory will be our ultimate vindication, your liberty will be our ultimate reward and the unprecedented success of the United States of America will be my ultimate and absolute revenge,” he said.
Journalists described the event atmosphere as embracing extreme and intolerant right-wing views.
Trump continued promoting himself as a victim and stoking grievances, while threatening opponents and praising Jan. 6 attackers.
“And in many ways, we’re living in hell right now because the fact is, Joe Biden is a threat to democracy – really is a threat to democracy,” Trump added.
“They’ve replaced law, precedent and due process with a rabid mob of radical left Democrat partisans masquerading as judges and juries and prosecutors,” he said.
His speech showed signs of cognitive difficulties but reinforced his role as a symbol for followers who embrace authoritarianism and white nationalist ideals.
Biden has warned that the 2024 election poses an existential threat, with some journalists saying they may flee if Trump wins.
The choices Americans make could determine whether the country withstands threats to its democratic system.
