Justice Clarence Thomas hired Crystal Clanton as a law clerk at the Supreme Court, despite allegations of racist conduct against her while working at a conservative nonprofit previously.

Specifically, a 2017 New Yorker article reported Clanton sent a text saying “I hate blacks.”

While Clanton denied recollection, her hiring by Thomas, who is Black, and two federal judges prompted an investigation by Democratic lawmakers.

The investigation was ultimately dismissed.

Thomas defended Clanton in a letter, saying, “bigotry is antithetical to her nature and character.”

The hiring is controversial given her past text message and role in Thomas’ wife’s media ventures after resigning from the nonprofit job.
