A new book titled American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady details disagreements between Melania and Donald Trump behind the scenes during his presidency.
They often watched different news channels and clashed over responses to crises such as Charlottesville.
Melania asserted independence by living separately in the White House and distancing herself from scandals, like canceling a trip after Stormy Daniels’ allegations emerged.
While publicly supportive, Melania privately took stances opposing her husband at times, issuing statements encouraging unity rather than division.
The book depicts Melania maintaining her own identity and disagreeing with Donald on issues from décor to media consumption to cultural matters, suggesting private tensions despite her public supportive role as first lady.
“Her tweets were small gestures that amounted to little more than digital ephemera,” author Katie Rogers writes. “Still, compared with her husband’s bridge burners, Melania’s missives established her as a rare figure in the Trump administration who seemed more interested in calming a cultural divide than widening it.”
