Jon Stewart addressed criticism from Democrats over comments he made in his return to The Daily Show comparing the ages of likely 2024 candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
Stewart said the response to his first show in 9 years was “universally glowing” before acknowledging negative reactions on Twitter from those like Keith Olbermann and Mary Trump, who accused him of “both-sidesism.”
“Wow. So you basically say because Biden is old, he is basically as bad as Trump. Why thr [sic] F do we never learn as a country? Sorry, but I won’t be watching you either,” Tennessee election commissioner Chris D. Jackson said.
Stewart defended that he was “just talking” and it was “one [expletive] show,” arguing “Democracy dies in discussion.”
“But that was on Twitter! Everything on Twitter gets a backlash. I’ve seen Twitter tell Labradoodles to go [expletive] themselves,” he said. “I just think it’s better to deal head on with what’s an apparent issue to people. I mean … we’re just talking here!”
“It was just one [expletive] show! It was 20 minutes! I did 20 minutes in one [expletive] show!” he said. “But I guess as the famous saying goes: ‘Democracy dies in discussion.’”
“But look: I have sinned against you, I’m sorry,” he said. “It was never my intention to say out loud what I saw with my eyes and then brain. I can do better. I can has learning. I can has it!”
For his part, Stewart apologized that it “was never my intention to say out loud what I saw with my eyes and then brain.”
In last week’s episode, Stewart had described Biden and Trump as “objectively old” and said it’s the candidates’ job to address concerns, not voters’ to remain silent, which sparked the backlash.
