Hunter Biden is set to testify behind closed doors before two Republican-led congressional committees investigating his foreign business dealings.
His appearance comes after months of negotiations over whether the deposition would be public or private, filmed or not, and how quickly any transcript would be released.
Both sides agreed the deposition on Wednesday would not be filmed and that the transcript could be released quickly, potentially within 24 hours.
An Oversight Committee spokesperson said, “As is standard with investigations, the committees are currently in the deposition and interview phase and then will move to public hearings.”
This marks a significant concession from Republicans, whose impeachment inquiry into Hunter’s father President Joe Biden has focused on Hunter’s overseas work but found no evidence of the president’s involvement.
A key figure in the inquiry who alleged Ukrainian bribery has since been criminally charged with fabricating his claims, further weakening the Republican case.
