Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov has been charged with fabricating a bribery scheme involving Joe Biden’s family.

Smirnov had told the FBI that Burisma executives paid the Bidens $5 million, which fueled GOP investigations.

While initially released, a judge ordered Smirnov detained pending trial due to concerns he could flee the country given his claimed ties to Russian intelligence.

“There is nothing garden variety about this case,” U.S. District Judge Otis Wright II said. “I have not changed my mind. This man will be remanded pending trial.”

Prosecutors say Smirnov continues pushing false stories and cannot be trusted.

The defense argues for release, saying Smirnov has no criminal history, but the judge ruled detention is needed given the serious charges and risks.

“He intends to vigorously defend these allegations, having never been in trouble his entire life,” defense attorney David Chesnoff said.
