New York City Mayor Eric Adams defended a pilot program to provide prepaid debit cards to migrant families, saying it could save the city money compared to other support programs.
The program would give up to 500 families cards to buy food and supplies, at a total estimated cost of $53 million if fully implemented.
“People want to give the impression that we did this in the cloak of secrecy, that we’re not saving money, that’s just inaccurate,” Adams said.
Adams spent significant time justifying the program, arguing it eliminates food waste and is more cost effective.
Rapper 50 Cent had initially criticized the effort and suggested Donald Trump as the answer, but Adams said 50 Cent changed his position after they spoke.
The city awarded a $53 million contract to a financial firm to administer the cards, with about $2 million going to the company and the rest funding family assistance. Adams called the policy a “small” one.
