A California judge upheld the Temecula Valley Unified School District’s ban on teaching Critical Race Theory and its policy requiring parental notification for any changes to a student’s gender identity or name at school.
The ruling rejects arguments that the policies violate students’ rights or are unclear.
While the judge sided with conservative parents and school board members, the decision does not affect a separate dispute over the district refusing to teach an LGBTQ-inclusive state curriculum.
Several legal challenges to similar policies in other districts remain ongoing as debates continue over the appropriate scope and delivery of diversity and gender-related instruction.
