Google announced it is pausing its Gemini AI image generator after facing backlash for producing historically inaccurate depictions.
The tool had been generating politically correct but factually incorrect images in response to prompts.
“We’re already working to address recent issues with Gemini’s image generation feature. While we do this, we’re going to pause the image generation of people and will re-release an improved version soon,” Google wrote on X.
While Google said Gemini depicts a wide range of people, it was “missing the mark” on historical contexts with more nuance.
The product lead apologized and said they were working to fix issues immediately.
“We’re working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately,” Google added. “Gemini’s AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people around the world use it.”
“But it’s missing the mark here.”
“We are aware that Gemini is offering inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions, and we are working to fix this immediately,” product lead Jack Krawczyk said.
“We will continue to do this for open ended prompts (images of a person walking a dog are universal!),” Krawczyk added. “Historical contexts have more nuance to them and we will further tune to accommodate that.”
As part of probing how woke Google has become, users found inaccuracies, forcing apologies.
The lead had previously expressed anti-white sentiments.
Gemini’s issues highlight challenges large tech firms face in developing powerful AI tools while avoiding political biases, especially around sensitive historical topics.
