A suspect charged in a plot to kill Iranian-American activist and journalist Masih Alinejad has been extradited from the Czech Republic to the US to face charges.
Polad Omarov was one of four men indicted in 2023 for the alleged plot.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the extradition, which came nearly 13 months after the indictment was unsealed.
Garland wrote in a statement, “The Department of Justice will not tolerate attempts by an authoritarian regime to undermine the rights to which every American citizen is entitled.”
Two other men charged have pleaded not guilty.
Alinejad confirmed she was the intended target, as she has criticized human rights abuses in Iran.
Alinejad said, “I want to thank the US law enforcement agencies for their vigilance. My adopted country has once again saved me from the murderous regime of my birth country Iran.”
She fled Iran after its disputed 2009 election and has worked with US-funded media.
The indictment alleges the men were part of an Eastern European criminal organization with Iran ties.
One man was arrested in New York after being found driving around Alinejad’s neighborhood with an assault rifle.
Alinejad expressed gratitude to US law enforcement for protecting her from Iran’s regime.
