Google has implemented significant layoffs affecting various teams like Voice Assistant, hardware, engineering, and ad sales to streamline operations and focus on key products.
The layoffs have impacted hundreds of employees, including in the AR team, with reports suggesting thousands in total.
“I want to be clear, when we restructure, there’s always an opportunity to be more efficient and smarter in how we service and grow our customers,” Google’s senior vice president Philipp Schindler said.
“We’re not restructuring because AI is taking away roles that’s important here. But we see significant opportunities here with our AI-powered solution to actually deliver incredible ROI at scale, and that’s why we’re doing some of those adjustments.”
The restructuring aims to prioritize smaller business clients over large businesses in ad sales.
Employees are concerned about job security and ethical implications of advancing AI technology, fearing further job replacements.
The focus on AI development has led to cynicism and burnout among the workforce.
Google’s restructuring reflects industry-wide financial challenges and ethical dilemmas related to AI and automation, highlighting the tension between innovation and its human impact.
