Tech billionaire Elon Musk quietly visited the White House in September 2022, marking his first meeting there since President Biden took office in 2021.
In 2021, Musk criticized the Biden White House for failing to invite Tesla to the EV summit. “Let’s not forget the White House giving Tesla the cold shoulder, excluding us from the EV summit,” Musk noted.
White House spokesperson Robyn Patterson said in a statement that the meeting “was one of many White House staff held with leaders in tech, academia, government and civil society as President Biden developed the most significant action any government in the world has taken on A.I. safety, security, and trust.”
“The Biden-Harris administration has been clear with tech leaders about the need for companies to ensure their products are safe before they’re released to the public,” he continued.
According to visitor logs, Musk and Tesla executive Rohan Patel met with White House staff for about an hour to discuss artificial intelligence.
This visit was not previously reported. Musk has complained that Biden officials ignore him and his companies.
The White House confirmed this was Musk’s only visit during the Biden administration and that the meeting focused on AI safety.
Musk and Biden have had a frosty relationship due to differing views on unions and other issues.
Biden previously said, Musk’s “relationships with other countries is worthy of being looked at.”
While Musk has met with Biden officials elsewhere, his absence from White House events has drawn notice.
Musk stopped at the White House multiple times during prior administrations but had no other entries since Biden took office.
