The White House plans to unveil major new sanctions against Russia on Friday in response to the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Press Secretary John Kirby said the sanctions would hold Russia accountable for Navalny’s death in prison under suspicious circumstances.
Kirby said, “We will be announcing a major sanctions package on Friday of this week to hold Russia accountable for what happened to Mr. Navalny and quite frankly for all its actions over the course of this vicious and brutal war that has now raged on for two years.”

“One of the most powerful things that we can do right now to stand up to [Russian leader] Vladimir Putin of course is to again pass the bipartisan national security supplemental bill and support Ukraine as they continue to fight bravely in defense of their country,” he continued.
The announcement comes as the Senate passed $95 billion in foreign aid including $60 million more for Ukraine, while the GOP-led House has not taken up the bill.
President Biden said Republicans in the House would be making a mistake by not responding, rejecting a question about whether Navalny’s blood is on their hands.
Biden expressed openness to meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson, who had criticized the lack of border security in the aid package.
