A second baby has been surrendered to Alabama’s first Safe Haven Baby Box located at a Madison fire station.
The baby was assessed and taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes are temperature-controlled incubators built into exterior walls of facilities to allow at-risk mothers to safely and legally surrender their newborns.
The outside door locks after a baby is placed inside, giving the mother time to leave before an alarm notifies staff.
The baby is then quickly removed and sent for medical care before being placed in state custody for potential adoption.
An organization called Kids to Love spearheaded a bill expanding Alabama’s Safe Haven law to allow mothers to surrender infants up to 45 days old instead of 72 hours.
More baby boxes are planned for locations in other Alabama cities.
