The US vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The resolution passed 13-1 with the UK abstaining.

The US instead prepared its own resolution calling for only a “temporary” ceasefire.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said proceeding with the vote was “wishful and irresponsible” and expressed support for a resolution that could be adopted by the Council to establish a temporary ceasefire to get aid to Palestinians.

However, Israel has insisted it needs to continue attacking Hamas in Rafah to destroy the militant group’s military capabilities, concerned Hamas could use the area to move weapons or hostages across the Egyptian border.

While a temporary truce could allow aid, Israel wants to eliminate the last Hamas battalions in Rafah to fulfill its goal of degrading Hamas’ ability to threaten Israel.
