A recent Siena College poll in New York showed President Biden leading former President Trump by only 12 points in the traditionally blue state.
Biden had less than 50% support at 48%, while Trump had 36%.
When independent candidates were included, Biden’s lead shrank to 10 points.
The poll also found Biden and Trump in a statistical tie of 28% each when voters were asked who they would prefer as the next president.
The survey highlights Biden’s weakness in blue states as Trump has signaled plans to aggressively compete in places like New York in 2024.
Trump said he will make a “heavy play” for New York and other blue states like New Jersey, Virginia and Minnesota through rallies and campaigning.
“One of the other things I’m going to do — and I may be foolish in doing it — is I’m going to make a heavy play for New York, heavy play for New Jersey, heavy play for Virginia, heavy play for New Mexico, and a heavy play for a state that hasn’t been won in years, Minnesota,” Trump said.
“I’m going to work them,” he said. “That doesn’t mean I’m going to work them as hard as I work Pennsylvania, where I’m doing very well.”
“But we’re going to do these other states too, and it will be a heavy move,” Trump said.
“That’s the belly of the beast, right?” he asked.
He floated the idea of renting Madison Square Garden, calling it the “belly of the beast.”
The competitive poll numbers could make Trump’s plans for expanding the battleground map more tempting.
